Some women never notice that their Mirena IUD is out of place … until they go to the their doctor to remove it and learn that it cannot be found. Other women get an inkling that something is wrong when they experience serious medical conditions such as cramping (often to one side) or unexplained sharp pains that come and go. Some women suffer from extensive bleeding that requires continuously changing pads and/or continuous monthly-long periods. Women may even be able to tell on their own if the Mirena has moved by feeling for the strings which should be reachable. If the strings cannot be found, the woman will probably require additional assistance from her doctor or nurse practioner to remove the Mirena IUD.
